At a cost to the tax payer of £8,000 a month, the temporary pop-up cycle lanes still remain in Stretford. A six-week consultation on what to do with the cones concluded on 17th of December 2021, but over three months later, no decision has been made on their future and the Labour Trafford Council administration has announced that the outcome of the consultation is further delayed until at least after the May local government elections.
Lijo John, a Stretford resident and one of the two Conservative candidates for Gorse Hill ward in the local elections said “Conservatives have been calling for the cones to be removed and a better thought through solution, co-produced with local residents to be consulted on.
“A local Conservative Party member also decided to create a petition on the issue in late 2021 asking for the traffic cones to be removed. The petition attracted over 2,500 signatures and was debated at a Council meeting, but the council refused to commit to removing the cones then and are still doing so.
“The cone chaos shows the incompetence of Trafford Labour who three months after the consultation closed are seemingly unable to count up the ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘maybe’ consultation votes.”
