At a cost to the tax payer of £8,000 a month, the temporary pop-up cycle lanes still remain in Stretford and it is reported that a decision on their future is being delayed by another consultation.
A six-week consultation on what to do with the cones concluded on 17th of December 2021, but over eight months later, no decision has been made on their future. Previously, the Labour Trafford Council administration had delayed a decision on the cones until after the May local government elections and now the Labour Executive Member for Climate Change and Transport Strategy has announced on social media that a second round of consultation on the cones ‘should’ commence this Autumn.
Tracey Haworth, a local Gorse Hill resident who is impacted daily by the queuing traffic created by the cones and who created a 2,752 signature petition on the issue in late 2021 asking for the traffic cones to be removed said “It’s quite incredible that 2 years after the ‘temporary cones’ were first placed on the A56, they still remain and now we are being told that there will be yet another consultation to determine their fate. How many more consultations are Labour planning after the next one until they get the result that they want?
“The continuing cone chaos shows the incompetence of Trafford Labour who eight months after the first consultation closed are still seemingly unable to count up the ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘maybe’ consultation votes and now are planning to prolong the agony even longer for Stretford residents and visitors to the area.”
