Additional Conservative Government funding to fix potholes and the announcement of new regulations to inspect utility company street works and assess the quality of their road repairs has been welcomed by North Trafford Local Conservatives.
The Government is investing more than £5.5 billion between 2020 and 2025 into highways maintenance, including the Potholes Fund announced at Budget 2020 and the extra £200 million announced at Budget 2023 which included £26.6 million across the North West to fix 530,000 potholes, increasing road safety for motorists. In addition, new regulations have come into force for a performance-based inspection regime to ensure utility companies resurface roads to the best possible standard after street works, potentially preventing thousands of potholes from developing in the future.
Commenting on the news, Tracey Haworth, one of the three Conservative election candidates for 2023 in the Davyhulme ward said “Many local residents have expressed their concern to me about the poor state of the roads and pavements in Trafford under the Labour council administration. The situation has arisen despite funding from the Conservative Government’s Pothole Fund and a grant from the Government of £9.74m to support investment in Trafford’s highways and infrastructure between 2023 and 2026.
“The new street works regime is welcome news however and will allow local motorists and cyclists able to enjoy smoother, safer and less congested journeys. I am delighted that the Conservative Government is taking action to help to fix Trafford’s roads through additional funding for repairs and new regulations to ease pothole pain.”
