At the Trafford Council Budget meeting for 2022/23 it was confirmed that the Labour administration, will place £1.5m of taxpayer’s money into its General Reserve or ‘rainy day pot’. At the same time Labour is increasing Council Tax by 3.73%. For an average or ‘Band D’ rated property, it will require the household to pay £1,784.26 per year, which is an increase of £64.18 since 2021/22.
Under the last Conservative administration, the ‘Band D’ Council Tax charge was £1,486 or £298 less per year and Trafford had the lowest Council Tax charges in Greater Manchester, which is now no longer the case.
Jonathan Coupe, Chairman of Stretford and Urmston Conservative Association said “At a time when household bills such as energy and food costs are soaring, the last thing local families need is a tax hike from Trafford Labour. Residents will be asking what their tax bill is being spent on when our streets are full of litter, leaves aren’t swept from our roads and our parks are in a dilapidated state.
“What is quite shocking about the tax hike is that the Labour council has been able to put another £1.5m into its General Reserve. That money could instead have been used to keep Council Tax lower, but Labour chose to hit residents with higher taxes instead.
“With Labour, it really is a case of pay more and get less. Stretford and Urmston residents deserve better than that.”
