The government is implementing the recommendations from the Fan-Led Review of Football Governance. A new independent regulator for the men’s elite game will be established and fans will be guaranteed a greater say in the strategic running of their clubs.
The government is doing this by establishing a strong, independent regulator to secure the future of football in England and end the unsustainable practices that jeopardise clubs; ensuring a minimum standard of fan engagement on club matters, putting fans at the heart of the game; creating an enhanced Owners’ and Directors’ Test, making sure experienced owners and executives are in place to run these vital community assets; safeguarding clubs against future breakaway leagues and reserving powers for the regulator to intervene in club operations when necessary.
North Trafford Conservative campaigner, Stuart Donnelly said “Football is really important to many Stretford and Urmston residents and for too long the football authorities have collectively been unable to support fans in tackling some of the biggest issues in the game.
“The government reforms will ensure fans are placed at the heart of football clubs and protect the heritage of our loved football clubs against unscrupulous owners.”
